Founded in 1872 by father-son Isaac M. and Isaac T. Brown, The Republic is one of the oldest family-owned newspapers in the country. It was known as The Republican in its first five years but became The Evening Republican when it was converted to a daily operation in 1877. It held that name until The Republic was adopted in 1967. It has been providing the Columbus area with a 7-day-a-week newspaper since 1985.

Throughout its history it has been recognized scores of times by state and national organizations for achievements in news reporting, advertising and circulation.

In addition to its daily award-winning newspaper that includes local classifieds, The Republic also provides an electronic version of the printed edition on its website, therepublic.com and prints and distributes dozens of specialty publications such as She, Parent Magazine, Discover Columbus, Prime Time, The Business Connection and Enjoy!

The Republic emphasizes local news in its coverage. This includes events that take place in its circulation area of Bartholomew, Brown, Jackson, Jennings, Johnson, Decatur and Shelby counties as well as news from around the globe that has an impact on its readership.
